IIRC, I give it priority over the z80 sound, so wav is the only thing playing. It works well for quick sound effects. Since the vgm background music is still progressing while muted, when it cuts back in, it's not so jarring. That is to say, it's not causing an obvious pause and resume in the bgm, it's just that it momentarily takes over.
So I would say the limit is that the 2 cannot play simultaneously. It's been a while since I've played it, but I think Metal Slug works the same way. Any of the callouts it makes takes over all sounds.
