You are correct. The front LED is usually green. It will change when the battery is low.
If you are using the "default" Freeplay LCD driver, you would also get an icon. There is now a newer/faster/better LCD driver that's experimental. It works very well on the Freeplay CM3, but it's not as well tested on the Freeplay Zero. We're also looking at ways to add some on-screen notification to that.
