Heh! You're like my colleague, Andrew. It seems like he'd rather solder together some surface mount components for testing something instead of some easy through-hole parts. That's fine with me, until I have to modify it and it falls apart. Tongue I'm fine under the microscope, but my eyes are nowhere near as good as they used to be after way too many years of staring at a CRT all day.

Then, by all means, go for the 0603 there. I still don't know how you'll mount it and hook it up, but maybe it can just be some double-stick tape, since the 0603 LED+resistor will be super light and small.
